When you have a visual signature, it's usually as a response to a strong desire to have one. Ralph´s describe his as a desire to not be like other photographers, not as much an effort to be original, but rather a search for satisfaction. And when he found satisfaction in his photography, it started looking like his work.
This also has to do with announcing a theme, not just perform variations on previously announced themes. For Ralph exposing for the highlight and make the shadows go black in his photos is part of his established theme. He talks about how it will bring him closer to the subject and force him to subtract.
